Nadia
Demure • Nervous • Compassionate
She's proof that you can walk through hell and still be an angel. - r.h. Sin
Female Belgian Tervuren
Demure would probably be the best term to describe Nadia. While she hates to see injustice being done, every time she tries to speak out against it she ends up tongue tied and teary eyed. When randomly approached by a stranger, she finds it impossible to make casual conversation and more often than not just ends up frustrated with herself. She prefers everything to be peaceful and can get overwhelmed in tense situations. She's slowly learning (with the help of the boisterous duo Booty and Light) that she doesn't have to be afraid but still has a ways to go. She occasionally has visions of the future ... but only really vague, dire visions.

History
Born into poverty and despair, Nadia was still a pup the first time she was sold into slavery. She would spend the next few years being tossed from place to place ... some masters were kind - at least as far as mostly ignoring her could be considered kind - while others ... were not. Her strange purple eyes that always seemed to see more than they should meant that she was often sent away not long after arriving ... it didn't help that while she didn't talk about them, she often had visions of catastrophes that usually meant that she DID know more than she should.
Beaten down and eventually broken, she found herself being transported to yet another sale when the group was hijacked and she was forced to join a group of soldiers - many of them close to her age. Because of her more reserved nature, she was essentially made an all around servant - fetching items, cleaning campsites, occasionally entertaining the more seasoned soldiers, etc.. This continued for several miserable months before she was suddenly approached in the middle of the night by a mysterious dog and told to follow if she wanted to get away. She had thought herself past the point of caring but something about this stranger awakened something inside of her and so she followed, finding herself with several other of the camp's less devout members.
They escaped during the night, fear and exhaustion warring within her as she ran. She was convinced that they would be found or that this was some sort of test of loyalty - one that she was failing and would suffer for in the morning light. However, the morning sun illuminated a ship docked in some remote harbor with the pirate flag flapping proudly in the breeze. For a moment she began to feel something new, not realizing that this strange emotion was hope ... but, of course, years of misery had a way of dampening spirits so she smothered the hope and instead followed to the ship - figuring that whatever was in store couldn't be much worse than everything else she'd suffered.
The stranger made short conversation with the captain of the ship before taking off with a pawful of gold. Nadia was just beginning to suspect that this was yet another sale when the captain addressed their shabby group of four. He started by introducing himself - Captain apparently being his name and title - before explaining what was going on. He told them shortly that he'd been hired to smuggle them out of the country and into another where there would be homes and safety waiting for them. He said he wasn't going to force anyone to come with him and they were free to leave now but if they did there was no guarantee of what was waiting for them. He also warned that while there was safety waiting at their destination, he couldn't guarantee that the trip itself would be safe. Somewhat intrigued but mostly just tired, Nadia agreed to remain on the ship and soon after her fellows did as well - probably for similar lackluster reasons.
The trip took almost two months during which she had almost started to relax (despite the several close calls with passing ships where they were all rushed below deck and made to stay down there for hours). She even managed to form a tentative 'bond' with the newest crew member, a flamboyant Aussie Shepherd who served as cook named Armand. His silly antics and lively stories even managed to coax a few smiles and the rare laugh from her - although she never quite let her guard down fully. Captain announced one night that they were sent to arrive at their destination the next day and she suddenly found herself dizzy, falling against the wooden floor as visions immobilized her. When she came to Captain and the ship's doctor, Acheron were standing before her. Mind still fuzzy from the intensive vision, she demanded that she meet the woman who had organized this expedition. Honestly, she had no idea why ... or who ... of even what she was going to do but she just knew that she had to meet her. This led to an awkward pause before Captain began to demand how Nadia knew the benefactor was a female and what else she knew. His suspicion and her own bleary conscious had her shaking and spilling the secret she had managed to hide for so long, the story of her visions flowing from her. Almost immediately she regretted her words, wishing she could take them all back ... hell, that she could return to that miserable island where things were awful but at least her curse wasn't out in the open to be exploited. Captain had grown quiet during her account but after her words were exhausted he merely nodded, giving short orders to Acheron to take care of her and they would see what 'the lady' wanted to do tomorrow.
Tomorrow took forever to come during which Nadia considered a myriad of different options - including running as soon as the ship docked to jumping overboard and making a swim for it - but never got the chance to put her escape plans into action. She was sent below docks with the others and hours began to tick by as one by one they were taken away until she was the only one left. The sun that had taken so long to rise that morning now took forever to set and when it was only when it was dark - and she was consumed by her own thoughts and doubts that 'the lady' came aboard.
Nadia's first instinct when this female stepped into below deck and met her eyes (with her one good eye, the other being covered by a blue velvet eye patch) was to run. Something about this woman screamed danger and Nadia's every muscle was screaming in response to take flight ... but then there was something else keeping her rooted ... something almost hopeful. She really couldn't say what it was - and still can't if asked about it - but there was something about this lady that put Nadia at ease despite the subtle threat. She introduced herself - by the strange moniker 'Booty' - and proceeded to chat casually with Nadia. For a long time they talked about nothing and everything, lulling Nadia into almost relaxing before suddenly Booty froze, staring down at the odd doubloon and opal necklace she was wearing before nodding and telling Nadia to follow her. On her way out, she told Captain that she would be taking charge of Nadia and thanking him for fetching her. He'd look surprised at her words but had inclined his head respectfully at her decision and so Booty and Nadia took off from the ship and through the town Nadia would come to know as The Valley.
On the walk, Booty told her that she would have a home with her for as long as she wanted one and even though Nadia didn't know why Booty was offering, she began to feel a sense of ... home. She couldn't even figure out why she felt so at ease and revealed (and probably never would) but she felt like every bad thing in her life was suddenly worth it to bring her to this point ...
Of course then they got to Booty's house and Light appeared out of Booty's doubloon and brought a whole new freak out.

Her Role
Naturally, Nadia's story didn't end there. She began living with Booty and Light, becoming a sort of adopted daughter to them. At first, she had a hard time fitting into their lives, flinching at loud noises and barely speaking. Eventually she began to realize that yelling wasn't always a bad thing - in fact, Booty and Light seemed to enjoy shouting matches. Her first breakthrough actually happened when she found an abandoned baby squirrel and tentatively asked the other two if she could raise him. They bonded over helping Nadia save the tiny baby animal.
The town itself has captured her love as well, the residents (after some initial awkwardness at her random appearance) embracing her as one of their own. She still goes out to the ships sometimes to hang out with the crew who saved her (the original crew being honorary uncles and the newer members being friends). She's slowly becoming more comfortable with herself although she's still very much an introvert.

So Where Does Her Story Take Her?
Eventually Nadia comes into herself, becoming more confident with herself. Of course, she still retains much of her demureness and sensitivity about certain subjects. She continues to have the occasional nightmare and has trouble with strangers but still managed so speak her mind about certain issues ... such as wanting to go with when the pirate/smuggling ship - now being led by Pipit after Captain and Calico's retirement - went on another crusade to free more children. For possibly the first time, she had a massive row with her adoptive parents. In the end, she won and was able to join the ship (not knowing that both Booty and Light threatened Pipit that if anything happened to her they would personally have his head and would destroy his ship plank by plank).
She would go on to become their front runner, entering these dangerous encampments to offer these beaten children a chance to escape. She would also become their guardian during the trip back to safety. Sid is usually her constant companion on these missions, flitting through the trees and alerting her to any danger.
