I am a forest, and a night of dark trees: but who is not afraid of my darkness, will find banks full of roses under my cypresses. -Friedrich Nietzsche
Male Australian Shepherd x Deer
Flurry is an Elder Forest Spirit ... in fact, he is the king of the forest spirits and as such rules the forests (and the spirits and guardians who protect them). He is proud to the point of arrogance and avoids mortals more out of disgust than anything else. He has a quick temper that manifests as coldness. He can be quite merciless when dealing with underlings and while he has been known to (rarely) give second chances, third chances are completely out of the question. He tends to create an intimidating figure wherever he goes and has a glare that can cut down even the strongest of dogs. He is slow to trust and his respect is not easily earned but once you have both he can be an outstanding ally. Despite his apparent frostiness to the world, he does have several (well-hidden) soft spots and would go to the ends of the earth (quite literally as the case would be) for those that he cares about.

History
Flurry was born to two elder forest spirits many, many years ago during a blizzard of epic proportions. Two days of labor - with the storm raging on outside of the cave - finally brought the already stubborn young spirit into the world. The squall continued to blast the area for another six days before finally settling down and allowing the new family to introduce their bundle to the rest of the council. While he was given a name suitable for his rank and breeding, his mother nicknamed him Flurry after the storm that had kept them trapped for so many days during and after his birth and it was this name that stuck.
For many years he trained with the forest spirits, excelling at everything that was put to him. He was a good student and sought to learn everything that he could ... and the power that came along with that was a bonus that he certainly didn't mind. He was the youngest spirit ever to be granted a guardianship and took over as Forest Guardian when he was less than 50 years old - a feat virtually unheard of even to this day. He spent many years taking care of his forest as well as studying everything that he could before eventually meeting another Forest Guardian who had just taken over her own post. He fell deeply, absolutely in love with the happy-go-lucky and cheerful spirit and soon his ambitions of becoming the youngest king in history slipped by as he began spending his days learning about the wonders that the world held instead of just callously rushing through life trying to reach the next step in his plan.
Sadly, it was not to last and after spending nearly 8 years together tragedy struck. A war was going on between several mortal clans and during one battle a fire was lit that spread to the nearby forests. Several forest guardians were lost in the resulting blaze among them was the effervescent young guardian that had held his heart. His resulting grief was strong as was his anger - directed half toward the mortals who had started the blaze and half to his father who had become king not long before and had refused to send additional forest spirits to help fight the blaze citing the danger as an excuse. He gave up his guardianship and spent nearly a hundred years avoiding everyone and everything to the best of his abilities.
He was going on his 94th year alone (having relocated to a tall mountain where even the forests couldn't grow) when a lost dog from one of the few packs that called the mountain their home happened upon his den. The packs had never been this far up the mountain so it was with some surprise that he looked out one day to see a golden female struggling through the snow on the next ridge over. For a long time he simply sat and watched her brutal undertaking as she fought through the thick snow constantly falling before rising and forcing herself onward. Of course, 94 years was a long time to be alone and perhaps it was that reason that he set out after her when she finally stopped struggling and gave in to the bed of white frost.
It would be a week before she finally regained consciousnesses, another few days before she could finally tell him her tale of a sickness that was going through her pack - that had already claimed the rest of her family and had now infected her brother - and how there were rumors of a powerful spirit that lived at the top of the highest mountain. He'd laughed at this, telling her that he didn't quite live at the top and that he had no interest in helping anyone - especially not any mortals. Initially her pleas fell on deaf ears but eventually she wore him down and he agreed to venture down off his mountain to see if there was even anything that could be done.
They made the journey and he ignored the unusual looks and the blatant stares that his presence generated. Instead he concentrated on the ailing and set about treating them. The sickness was one that he had seen before and the cure wasn't too difficult - a little bit of magic and some herbs - at least for the ones who weren't too far gone with the disease ... those who were too ill were told that there was nothing left that could be done for them. He was hailed as a hero to the people - a title that he didn't want - and he soon returned to his home, telling the golden female not to tell anyone where he lived.
A month later, she showed up outside his home with a smile, a basket of food, and a thank you from her pack. He reluctantly let her in, attempting to scare her off with his gruff attitude. It didn't work and month after month she showed up at his home with more food and - more importantly - conversation. He began to look forward to her visits, his surly attitude softening as time went bye. His love wasn't as sudden as his first love but soon it was growing as her visits became every couple of weeks. He thought that she felt the same way but when he finally confessed she responded with shock and dismay, telling him that she thought of him as her best friend and savior but that he was much too abnormal to consider as a mate ... and she had already taken a mate back at her pack. He responded the only way he knew how - with anger - and forced her to leave. She didn't come for the next month and a half before finally showing back up again ... with a regiment of forest spirits. Apparently they had shown up in her pack, lured by rumors of a powerful spirit who had healed so many and were there to bring him back to his father and she had led them right to him.
At this point he was too downtrodden to bother resisting and allowed them to take him back to the glade that housed all the forest spirits who were not guardians assigned to forests. He also didn't refuse when his father insisted on putting him back as a forest guardian - he was one of the best they had ever had and his lineage was too impressive to be tossed aside - and threw himself back into his tasks with a force. It was a surprise to everyone - at least those who didn't know the driven spirit before his departure - when he was allowed to leave his post early to join the elder forest spirits in the glade and an even larger surprise when he was allowed to join the council. Most didn't stay surprised, however when they saw how ambitious and determined he was with every duty he was assigned. Soon he was back to his old self - albeit older, wiser, and more callous to the world.
It was with no surprise to anyone when his father eventually stepped down from being king, he took over with the boldness that they had come to expect from everything he did.

His role
Flurry has vowed to be a better king than his father, and what he lacks in his father's jovial nature he makes up for in raw grit and logic that is tempered by desire to save all of those under him. He's given up on love, dismissing it as an emotion that makes you weak and likes to scoff at those who declare themselves in love. Unlike most kings before him - who preferred to rule from the safe glade - Flurry prefers to journey out and meet with the forest guardians face-to-face when he can.
